History of Pinsk

The town of Pinsk has become the epicentre of the revival of Yiddishkeit in Belarus.

Before the war, Pinsk was the center of Karliner Chassidus. 74% of the towns population was Jewish. During the Holocaust, thousands of the Jews of Pinsk were murdered by the Nazis. The remnants of Jewry which the Nazis left behind them, were attacked and ravaged by Communist Russia.

By the late 1980's, Pinsk Jewry was virtually non existant.

Pinsk Todaygirls

In the year 2000, Yad Yisroel sent a trusted messenger to Pinsk. Moishe Fhima had worked for Yad Yisroel in Kiev for many years, and the time had now come for him to start a new kehilla.

Since the establishment of Yad Yisroel in Pinsk the town has been revolutionized. Yad Yisroel established in Pinsk two boarding schools, a yeshiva, a mikva and Chesed aid for the elderly.

These programs and projects are supporting Judaism thorughout Belarus. Ten experienced shilichim have moved to Pinsk to work for Yad Yisroel. The strength and energy which is generated by the Pinsk Jewish community has a direct effect on every other commity in the country.
